Quote: Weak strike vs. wear from handling always throws me for a loop on the Morgans.
Same here...from what I have read the "O" struck Morgans tend to have weaker strikes so you have to take that into consideration when grading. Has anyone else heard this too?
This is not an unusual strike, particularly for this date and mint. I checked my little book on Morgans. Specific to the 1901-o, there was a high mintage and the dies were overused resulting in the weak looking strike. Also, it was in 1901 and dates following til 1904 when a new reverse die was used which did not show the breast feathers as strong. You have to tilt the coin to see the definition in the breast feathers.
