Some things I've acquired over the past few months. From top, left to right: 2010-2012 silver proof ATB Quarters; Gettysburg 5 oz. ATB; 1883 CC Morgan from the GSA Hoard; PF-66 '64 proof Kennedy half; a pair of nicely toned Morgans (toned on the reverse); some Barber and Walking Liberty halves; a roll of common-date SLQ's; a roll of common-date 90% Washington quarters.  |

More nice world coins! Here are my 4 favourite picks from today's lot:  1. Vatican City 1955 100 Lira, UNC The first post-war Vatican issue of this denomination. I like Vatican coins, because they have that overworked, extremely detailed aesthetic to them, which ends up reminding me of Vienna (because they are both Catholic, right). 2. Norway 1923 50 ore, F This is an interesting coin. From what I can gather: 1923: Everything is going tickety-boo in Norway 1924: NORWEGIAN EMERGENCY - the new 1924 50 ore coins have holes in them. All of the old ones don't. Despite cries from the extremely math-challenged and change-resistant Joe Norwegian Public, unable to figure out the purpose of these new metal disks with holes in them, the Mint rounds up as many of the old coins as it can find and punches a hole straight through them. It neatly perforates a lion on the other side, since the old design doesn't have an empty space in the middle. Mine is one of the holed coins! 3. Norway 1985 10 Kronor, XF I also like this Norwegian coin! To compensate for a fairly high-relief King on the other side, this side has a depression in the design. Simple! 4. West Germany 1957J 2 Marks, XF The first easy-to-find 2 Mark type, and it has Max Planck on the other side. Since I like physics, I had to get this (still looking for the Otto Hahn commemorative 5-mark coin). The whole design is very nice, too. |

So I started going to a local liquor store at lunch and asking them for dollar and half dollar coins.. it is near a large military base, so I figure I might get lucky.. Got a dozen half dollars on tuesday and one struck me as strange. I though it might be a proof, so I looked up some images... sure enough.. it looks exactly like a proof. I just returned from Germany a week ago and in addition to the wonderful cultural heritage and greenery and of course people I was extremely pleased to chance upon a few coin and antique shops. finally managed to pick up a few german coins I've been looking for at good prices and also because one of them was selling coins in a junk pile at 10 cents each, I managed to return with these:  This is only part of what I managed to obtain for 11 euros so you can imagine the trouble taken to neatly pack them for the trip home.  collection of some world coins I wouldn't have bothered to buy alone on ebay  Lincoln cents! This is only part of the find, with the best examples temporarily wrapped in acid-free paper. Never expected to find some with that glorious lustre of copper.  GDR period pfennigs, most I chanced upon seemed AU or XF at least, more lincoln cents and some denominations before the new penny series from queen Elizabeth II's reign. I found the half penny with a chrome like surface interesting although I doubt it'd be worth anything. Is this a great find or what? |

here's something I found in the pile.   beautiful lustre and original colour. probably a token in commemoration of albrecht durer   a guide to the kamasutra in a whole new way  probably a german token as I found a perfect example in another shop a few hundred metres down  and some shell tokens from 1969. Anybody knows if they're worth anyrhing or the circumstances of their mintage? |

This week's world coin buys (groan):  Danish commemoratives! Both probably UNC, one commemorates the first diesel merchant ship and has picked up some great toning - the other commemorates Prince Joachim's wedding. Oh, and they are worth $3.75 each in face value (of course I bought them for less).   The unpopular Hungarian monometallic 100-forint coin, which was too similar to the 20-forint coin. It is now a small, thick bimetallic coin that circulates just like any other coin - yet another general public that's bearing the burden of heavy, heavy high-denomination coins. Think of it as a Magyar SBA.  A nice East German coin, 1957 2 marks.   A (very) nice West German coin, 1957-J 2 marks. Krause says it's worth $65 in this condition, I got it for $1    Everyone's favourite Polish astronomer, Mikolaj Kopernik.   A South African penny! Mintage: 284,000 - less than the 1909-S VDB penny, yet Krause says it's worth just $1 in Fine. See why world coins are much more fun? Edited by nalaberong

This one I got today in the mailbox.. Dutch VOC duit, Zeeland 1754.. I think they re cut the 4, good visible with a loupe.. Got problems making a good pic without daylight..    |

I've just bought three pre-decimal UK coins.
1887 Crown (Victoria)
1826 Six-pence (George IV)
1758 Shilling (George II)
All sterling silver. I'll post pics once they arrive. They look pretty good condition, especially the Crown and Six-pence.
