I have always liked the diversity of the older Canadian nickels.

During WWII they not only changed the metal to tombac which made brass looking nickels, and then to chrome plated steel which made blue looking nickels, but they also changed the shape from being round to having 12 sides.

In 1942 they keep the familiar beaver REV, but in 1943 they made a really cool change. There was a large V centered on the REV which had two meanings: It was a Roman numeral V for 5 cents, and it was the WWII V for Victory sign.

Then to top it off, those Clever Canadians put a hidden message in Morse code around the rim.

In 1951 a new commemorative REV was made for the discovery of the metal nickel, and these coins were struck in nickel. A normal 1951 REV was also made but struck in the blueish chrome plated steel This was done in 1952 as well and continued into 1953 and 1954. The latter two years being when Queen Elizabeth II was on the throne.

On ebay I chanced upon a Capital plastic holder with a complete set of George V nickels and many looked to be in very nice condition. I had always wanted this plastic case, but finding one is not easy. I got the set for 45.00 shipping/tax etc. Basically a bit over the cost of the holder I think.

The set included the key 1947 nickel with a small dot after the 7. I was blown away by the luster on the chrome plated steel dates. A lot of the set will be an update to my competed set. I include 2 pics of the REV side to show the luster from different angles. I feel like I hit the jackpot n this. Not bad for a random, "It think I spend 15 minutes or so and browse ebay for something interesting tonight before going to bed" occurrence!
