I inherrited this nickel. The edges are very odd. It is as if they were not rolled or pressed. I have taken some side views. I am not a collector, but have looked online and in books and have not found anything like this. Please advise.

Could be @GC, but seems more likely to me that someone spooned the edge of this War Nickel.

Almost certainly been spooned as Spence mentioned. If you check the diameter of the coin, you should see that it's smaller than a standard nickel

It has the look of someone 'beating down' or spooning the edge. Search YouTube for 'coin ring jewelry' and you're likely to find some edge treatments which begin to form what you're seeing. I'm not saying that the nickel was being formed for jewelry purposes--just saying that the technique which produces that edge appears similar. I have a Lincoln Wheat cent which has a very similar look.

Bottom line, it's post mint damage.

Spooned -- "Spooned is a method of hammering the edges of a coin with a spoon, and given enough time and skill a person can make the coin into a ring. People use[d] to "spoon" coins, and the most skilled could actual pound silver ring from a coin with nothing more than a table spoon."

Looks spooned, not a mint error imo.

To CCF! Not a real error coin unfortunately. It's just an damaged and altered coin. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD), meaning that it happened after it left the U.S. Mint.
