Two recent additions to my collection of early large cents: 1794, S-72, the so-called 'true head' of 1795, and 1812, S-289. The S-289 is a very late die state.

Very happy with these two.

How would you guys grade them?

Thanks!

HA Archives lists a few S-289's with similar heavy peripheral 'flow-lines' where the edge devices are 'drawn' into the rim.
Apparently this happened as the S-289 die became increasingly worn.

I'd say VG-10 and F-15. Wonderful coins.

Agree that reverse of the 1812 is very cool and sucks you in. Its like an optical illusion. Nice ones.

There is no trace of the broad hair braid across the bust on the 1794, which is a defining characteristic of a Fine grade. This is choice for sure, but would not grade above VG-10.
