or do you openly share with friends, family, acquaintances? I for one love to share my latest purchase or pull up a picture of my favorite coin to show off. I can see some people being secretive (i.e., not wanting to show off due to the monetary perspective) but that's what the safe is for Thoughts?

I show most of my new purchases to my husband -- some he's interested in (from the shiny art perspective). A couple of my friends know I have an interest, but no further than the state/ATB quarters and my Kennedy pocket piece. Everything else stays in the safe. Receipts go in the shredder, and paper catalogs (which I hate, hate, hate) get stored for a trip to a recycling bin somewhere away from my house and with any mailing labels removed. Edit:

Welcome to the Community!
Family and friends I share.
Total strangers? No
As far as safes go it'll slow down the amateurs but the pros are a different story. Most safes can be easily opened with a .22 stuck behind the ear of someone near and dear to the owner. (I have my combination on speed dial...just in case). The sad thing is I would expect a robbery to not have a good ending no matter what I did, or didn't do.

You can't go wrong in secrecy, be very careful who you share with, including family using any addictive substance. Let them find your cash pot or estate when they inherit.

Thanks for the welcomes! I was a very active member of the community back in the day, but it seems that my account is now inaccessible.
I always consider communities like this one interesting. The level of anonymity (while high) still provides for a communal feel. I enjoy that everyone shares their new purchases or progress. I'd love the opportunity to share my collection in it's totality, with the option of sharing certain pieces privately.
Think social network for coin collecting!

Everything that is worth anything is in a safe deposit box. The bit of inexpensive stuff I rotate to and from home is kept safe also.
I also have a friend similar to kind of friend John mentioned and am constantly close enough to call on him for assistance. Neighbors are sure to understand this from the booms that eminate from the yard here when we decide to target practice. And I know they are of like mind b/c, for example and coincidence, even as I am typing this a neighbor is out in back of his house shooting a rifle.
Besides those close friends such as John mentioned, I do have a few others who know I collect coins. Most of them are coin and insulator collectors.

I'm a firm believer in protecting my assets, though I'd love a digitized version of my collection that I can share with other coin folk. This could be great for further documenting and protecting the collection (for insurance), monitor progress (collecting series.

My wife and kids have little (okay no) interest in my collection. I do try to find ways to make it interesting for them, but it seems to fail. I do not have any friends or family who share my interest. I belong to CCF and one other coin forum.

Interesting point of view. What kind of interactions do you get from the forums that you would consider most beneficial.
For me, getting advice on purchases and having access to people with in-depth expertise.

I talk to a lot of people about coin collecting. And explain about cherry picking and not buying above face. With exception of a few silver coins nothing in my collection is worth much more than face. I do it for the fun of the chase. And a lot of people just give me stuff. Obliviously. banks will sell for face. I will post pictures if I think it was a good enough find. My wife also is very lucky at finding old odd stuff. So we enjoy it together. I just gave my young nephew a IKE a SBA and a Sacagawea to start up his collection of 10 coins.

I guess you can say I'm somewhat secretive of my collection . Some family members ,no problem , but other family I wouldn't trust them with a collection of napkins . Protecting what you prize is only common Cents which I have plenty of .
