Got my first Seated half dollar. My largest silver coin . Funny, got 13 Spanish Reales and 4 early French in the last 4 years but that's my first half dollar.   |

Liberty Seated coins are great. They are old, beautiful and rare (at least by 20th century standards). A long, long time ago when I was around ten, I started buying good grade Liberty Seated dimes. They were very old and not very expensive. I even got an 1839o, which became by far my oldest coin. I only learned later that it was a "no drapery" variety. Now, after going about the business of life, I have returned to collecting in retirement. I first started collecting Peace and Morgan dollars like a madman. Then my wife remarked while going through my albums with me that they were all really neat and everything, but they all pretty much looked the same. I thought about it and agreed, while different dates and mint marks are exciting to an enthusiast, they mean nothing to a non-collector. And, date and mint mark differences really are pretty minor from a purely visual standpoint. So, I started a high grade type collection, and it is my current ongoing project. My favorite part has been pulling together the roughly 25 coins in the Liberty Seated series. If you like your L.S.half dollar, and have an interest in other LS coins, I suggest you google the Liberty Seated Collector's Club. I have learned a lot as a member.

I have only found two other Seated coins. One of them is a mint condition 1837 Half Dime ''no stars''. I'll need to find them a bit more often to start a collection ;-) |

A large part of the US silver coins (as well as Spanish ones) from that period that I see being found while metal detecting appear to be worn almost beyond recognition. |

Soil types can be very abrasive over the years, or even centuries. Even when I think I've dug what looks like AU Barber dime, under magnification there are at least hairlines.
