I started coin collecting when I was about 7 years old and my grandfather used to give me a Morgan dollar from his shoebox full of them when I did some cleaning work around his house. The first time I saw a Morgan dollar, I was hooked. Also my grandmother used to let me dig up her yard and go treasure hunting for Mercury dimes and Buffalo nickels. Her yard was near an old transit depot and many coins were lost there. So, what is your story?

From my paper-route when I was 12 or 13. Coming home with so much change in my pants pockets my pants would be falling down! My grandfather gave me my first Whitman (Lincoln) folder.

I was about 14 . My uncle gave me a 1905-O Barber half dollar , With that little incentive I decided to buy ''The Red Book'' and that started my journey into coins .

I think what first started my interest was when I noticed a man on a coin and originally assumed it to be a U.S. penny, but turned it around to discover that it was Canadian. Before that time I had never seen a Canadian coin without Queen Elizabeth on the obverse. Shortly thereafter, my dad divided up his Whitman folders between my sister and I. I was oldest so got to choose first. I picked pennies since it was the most complete. My sister picked quarters, then I picked dimes. My sister cried because she wanted the dimes because they were a larger denomination than the nickels. Shortly after, Canada celebrated its 125th. There was a lot of buzz as there were special quarters issued. During that year I went for a tour of the Ottawa mint and purchased a roll of pennies and nickels (that was all I could afford at the time). My interest ebbed and flowed over the subsequent years. Then a few years ago, I joined a local coin club, met a neighbour who had a sizable collection and bought a few more books on coins. I have have been hooked ever since.

Sounds lame but I got hooked at 7 years old from watching reruns of Dennis The Menace on nickelodeon. Mr. Wilson sure did love his coin collection.

One time I was in my local hock and save and I saw a 1932 penny in the show case and thought "huh... I guess I'm taking you home." And I was hooked.

Making change on the milk truck when I was a milkman kicked my collecting in high gear.

I was a kid and my Mom sent me to the grocery store on my bike. I got to keep any change when I ran this errand. On this particular trip, I received an odd looking Lincoln Cent in change. Turned out to be a 1909. I told my Father about it and he brought out his stash of old coins that I'd never known about. When I saw the pile of Walkers he had - I was hooked. It's still the prettiest series I've ever seen. BTW - that '09 is sitting in my Dansco right now.

I was 9 years old when my grandfather and father gave me their combined very small coin and stamp collections, and I remember looking at the first page in the makeshift album and saying to myself " these are just some big old dirty cents. Hahahahha they were all early 1900's Canadian large cents. Then I flipped to the last page and saw two beautiful Peace dollars 1922,1924, and a gorgeous 1936 King Geo.V Dollar. From that exact moment I was hooked. Liberty.....The Eagle......the full detail of the Crown on the king........the luster on these coins, just beautiful.

I started around 2009. I worked in a fast food restaurant and came across a 1941 Quarter, and held onto it. I knew it was silver but I never really collected them before and I decided to keep an eye out for more silver coins, which led to the harvesting of wheat pennies too. I had no interest in anything more than the value of the metals themselves, but that perspective was short-lived because a couple of months later, I scored a 1906 Indian Head cent in the cash register in impressive condition, and at the moment I began researching more and more. I ended up adopting the hobby of collecting coins, for more than just metal value. I even still have that 1941 Quarter and that 1906 Indian head to this very day too. They're my most sentimental coins I have, and I thank them for bringing me into the Coin World

My origin story is linked in my signature... Quote: It began when my dad gave me an couple of Ikes he brought back from Vegas. It took hold when my mom would buy me books and supplies to feed my interest.

My grandpa gave me a Buffalo nickel at 6 years old. Collected for many years. Then stopped for many years until this past July when my aunt passed. Being her only relation I inherited everything, including her full house. Hoarder. Anyway, got to the last room in basement, and in the corner on bookshelf was a binder full of coins, opened it, first page, 1909 wheat, 1909 vdb , 1909 s vdb . I know there are better coins than the 1909 s vdb, but that was the one I wanted more then any, because grandpa telling me about it. Then the binder got stolen. Now I'm roll hunting with a fire under me, hoping to find another or a coin that I can sell to buy one.

I'm in the same boat as Mill-House_. Except mine was a 1936 Quarter. I wasn't fortunate enough to hang onto it though as a coworker took it instead but it got me interested in old silver coins and then wheat pennies which I'd find often enough. Eventually I started looking on the internet about the history of US coins and I fell in love with the designs, and the precious metals was a bonus to me. Back when money was real money. I started out putting a Dansco 7100 together from circulation and it just extended from there. Now I have a whole list of things I want to get into eventually when I have the funds, both US and foreign. I had no hobbies or real interests before coin collecting so this has been really beneficial to me, not so much for my wallet though.
