Hi Guys

I have a similar coin that is now at current CNG. the link is below. It says that only 5 example exist with 3 in coinarchives. if really only 5 examples of this coin exist in the world I bet it should be much much higher than 150$ advertised in CNG. am I missing something here?

How about some pics of your coin? Or if you've already posted it to CCF, a link to that thread? Thx.

I don't think those citations should be interpreted as necessarily representing all the examples extant. And in any case, generally speaking scarcity alone is never a guarantee of high value. That said, I think the coin being offered is, with that eagle motif reverse, a quite attractive one and graded very conservatively.

CNG doesn't say that only 5 exist. They say that Prieur cites 5 examples (among collections and sales surveyed for his book). Big difference! One must also consider how finely the author divides varieties and how many (or how few) collectors are so specialized as to spend big money for a relatively rare but minor variety that a non-specialist would likely overlook.

With some issues, there are countless minor varieties but they total to many thousands of extant coins of the type. These eagle tetradrachms were used as currency in a large city and were issued in large numbers. Unless it is an unlisted variety, it won't command very high prices. With 8 cited examples, you can be quite sure more are out there as well so it isn't really that rare. Think about the types that were only ever issued from a single die in a provincial mint...for them, the rarity commands a much higher price.
