Sorry for the junky photos. They have nice luster and the 1867 has some really nice toning on it: purples, pinks, lime greens, blues, purples, orange. You just have to turn it the right way to see it. Both coins look much nicer and more normal in hand than the pictures indicate. Also, can someone guess why I bought the 1869?

Update: Both are agreed by ANACS(small holder) as MS61

Hi Amazon,
The 1867 looks like it has slight wear at the tips of the wreath on the right side, and on the scrollwork at the edges of the shield. I'd guess it makes AU-55 or so. The strike is solid, with excellent detail in the shield lines and the reverse star radials are complete. The date looks like it was heavily re-punched. I recall that there are many repunched date varieties for the 1866; is this the case for 1867 as well?

The 1869 has more wear and less apparent luster. I'd guess EF-45 or AU-50 for this one. I notice the date is high, touching the bottom of the shield. There are a lot of raised lumps in the shield which I presume are the result of a rusted die. I don't know if those features make the coin special, but I would buy it if the price were right. It's a high quality example of a coin that is usually seen in low-grade, damaged condition. Nice pick-up!

Nice pickup Amazon! I assume the date of the 1869 converging with the shield is the reason you snagged that one? Also, how did you take those pics? They show some nice detail.

Those photos aren't mine. They were provided in the auction. I think it's scanned because the colors aren't right and it looks dull where in real life the coin has luster.

These coins are definitely one of the hardest series to grade. The strikes on these are notoriously weaker, so often they appear to have wear when they don't. I have sold a number of these and have finally learned a little more about how to grade them. I'm surprised that the 1867 didn't come back a 62 or 63. I think 61 is correct on the 1869, though the scans on that one are better. Are you able to post your own pics of these coins now that they have been graded? I would be very interested in seeing better pictures of these.

Susan, your back! Hope everything is well. I know Shield nickels are hard. I've been collecting them for almost a year, and I'm still not confident. I did take some photos before, but I was in a hurry and they were horrible. I'll try to post some better one soon. 1867 is my favorite out of these two because it has some nice toning on it and it's semi-PL.

I never really left; just got swamped with work. I still check in and read. I just don't post as often. Hopefully, eventually I'll be able to. I just had to respond to your Shield nickel topic, however.

Glad to know that some Shield nickels lured you out from lurking.

I took some photos, but I had really bad lightening so they're not that good.
