Hi, what do you think about this 1884 Indian Head cent? Although it is hard to see in the pic, the four diamonds are visible. Do you think there is a doubled die in the last pic, or just a "Longacre Outlines"? Thank you! Edited by DarkSun 07/24/2008 10:47 am

I think it is Longacre doubling, which was found on these coins up to around 1886. Personally, I think they should carry a small premium above the normal, as they are not super common, but in reality, I don't think they carry any substantial premium.
Very nice coin!

Looks to be a very nice problem free, original surface AU50. I also feel that the Machine Doubling gives it a little character. I great addition to any IHC collection.

I would say that's Longacre outlines as well--those marks are part of the die tools. In a real DDO, you should see some separation of the serifs: Nice coin! I cannot see the diamond detail, but I'm leaning towards an AU55-MS60 BN.

I'd have to agree with Kurt. I think there is a possibility that it's MS60 but I'd have to see the diamond detail more closely. I also don't see any wear on the feathtips at all. That is a nice one! Also, on the reverse, what is that little squiggly line below the "N" in "CENT"? Is that maybe something on the camera lens? Or maybe it's something on my computer screen!

Here are some pictures of the ribbon. The thing below the N was just a fluff :) EDIT: There are some areas with rest of a tape (something like Scotch tape). Can I remove them with Ethanol? Or will the coin be graded "cleaned" after this procedure?

Good question on whether or not it would be regarded as cleaned after you soak it in something. Rather than ethanol you might want to try Xylene. That seems to be the product of choice when dealing with copper coins. But you might want to see what some of these chemical expert folks might say about that first.

Based on the last pics, I'm going to say it's a good strike and perhaps AU55-58.

From what I've heard, the only safe chemical for soaking a coin is 100% acetone. That should remove any tape residue.
