I've recently become interested in commemorative halves (I have a couple slabbed) so I thought I'd get my feet wet with one of the more affordable issues. I bought this on ebay and when I received it, it looked better than what I was expecting. The seller has over 5000 feedbacks with 99.8% positive. I'm wondering about cleaning or any other problems you may notice. Are my concerns justified, or did I happen to run across a nice coin?

Most likely cleaned at one time. How was it described in the listing you bought it from?
There are many just like it out in Coinland.

All the description said was "excellent specimen, nice luster". The picture in the listing was through a 2X2, so it was kind of hard to see it very well.
edited for spelling.

With the caveat that the images provided are not very clear and are also overly bright -- both of which limit the ability to see the coin's true surfaces...
The coin appears to have a fairly good strike but its fields have quite a few dings/scratches/marks. If the color presented is close to accurate, I would say the coin has been dipped at least once to remove possible toning and/or dirt/residue. It's also possible that it has been wiped, through not too harshly - I just can't tell from the images provided.
Better images would certainly assist folks in providing you with better feedback.

Based on the bright photos provided - genuine, AU range cleaned example of the USA initial commemorative half dollar.

Looks like a "details" coin for cleaning. Judging from all the field marks probably AU-58 details.

The question for me would be if it was a fair price for what I paid. It looks like a nice AU coin to me. If not knowing for sure whether it was cleaned or not bothers you, or if you're not confident enough in your grading skills yet (nothing wrong with that), then you might consider buying slabbed coins. That said, if you do buy slabbed coins you're just looking at another opinion of the technical grade. I've seen some higher grade Columbian halves that had poor eye appeal compared to the coin you purchased.
