Couple questions. The BEP plans on printing 7 billion bank notes in 2019. 90% will be replacement notes for worn out notes from circulation. 1st question,does that mean they will all be star notes? 75% were printed in 2018,yet I have not seen a ton of star notes. The BEP also plans on printing $2 notes. 2nd question,will they be dated 2019? Thanks all, John1  Edited by John1

1st Answer: No. 2nd Answer: Yes. The 7.0 billion notes included in the FY 2019 order reflect the (FED) Board's estimate of net demand for currency from domestic and international customers. The Board's print order (the BEP is the printer) is determined by denomination and is based on destruction rates and historical payments to and receipts from circulation. Historically, the majority of the notes that the Board orders each year replace unfit currency that Reserve Banks receive from circulation. The estimated number of notes that Reserve Banks will destroy accounts for nearly 90 percent of the FY 2019 print order and includes both unfit currency, operational changes, as well as old-design notes received from circulation. Growth in currency demand and the triennial order for $2 notes account for the remainder of the notes in the proposed order.  |

The OP's statement "75% were printed in 2018, yet I have not seen a ton of star notes" is not correct and not even close. Star notes usually comprise less than 1% of total notes printed.
I believe the $2 notes to be printed will be series 2017, so the answer to the 2nd question should be no.

They just aren't consistent across all series and denominations. They could just as easily make it a series 2019. |

Damaged and worn out paper money is replaced by newly printed paper money. Newly printed paper money that is damaged or found defective is replaced with star notes. Two completely different things.
A new series, 2017, has been established for the design change (signatures) and I sincerely doubt the BEP will give the $2's a separate/different series because of denomination or starting later than the other denominations.

The higher denomination notes don't follow the series designations established by the $1s for a given signature combination and I don't believe there were any other design differences that would have caused there to be a difference.  The BEP has been pretty consistent since then, but you just never know for sure until you see the printing  |

FWIW: I can't stand the new, large-portrait notes. I understand that a lot of notes (large and small portrait) are torn, worn, mutilated, etc. so it's fine to shred those. Yet, there are many millions of small-portrait notes getting pulled and shredded before their time. I understand the arguments - old notes are easier to counterfeit, etc., but I love and miss the old portraits. I always hold onto the few small-portrait notes I find. Sorry for the rant.

That's what's great about this hobby --- you're entitled to your opinions (and what you like to collect), jeffbuckes. I like the old small-portrait notes too, and appreciate them in my collection. Personally, I like the large portraits, or at least they have grown on me. Particularly the $50. I think the modern colorized Grant is one of the best-looking modern notes ever produced by the BEP. Doesn't take away from the small-portrait Grant but the U.S. flag and his stern visage on the large-portrait varoeties.... nice! P.S. @Yellow88, that picture never fails to crack me up.
