My friend is trying to sell this and the complete set on Etsy, but after doing some comparisons of other similar coins, I think he might be under pricing it? Any ideas on value we are dealing with? Here is the 1877, the picture is taken with the coin behind the clear protective plastic which probably obscures some of the details, since we didn't want to risk taking it out and smudging or marking it up.

@JJS2, first welcome to CCF. Second, below is a link to the NGC website, which could provide some ballpark values for this coin, assuming it real. For a reasonably high ticket item like this, your friend might consider getting the coin slabbed. https://www.NGCcoin.com/coin-explor...coinid-12127Others here will be able to provide a grade range for this coin, but also including a pic of the rev of this coin would definitely help them.

When evaluating a high price key coin you have to show photos of obverse and reverse . I'm no expert on 1877 IHC's but the date looks wrong to me . If genuine ,I don't like the very soft AMERICA on obverse for a high grade key . Lets see what the experts say . They will not give you a value without a reverse pic .

Need better photos, remove it from the album and shoot both sides large enough for us to evaluate condition and authenticity.

cant give opinions without both sides. take photos in natural light and as close as possible but keep a sharp focus. crop using the optimizer on this site. if this coin is MS its a $4000 plus coin. even a high AU coin is in the $3500 range. I agree it should be slabbed for resale.

The 1877 looks ok to me but it is improperly cleaned which knocks down the value. I still wouldn't trust that one raw though

The 1877 has the correct Shallow N reverse. It has high AU sharpness, but the obverse color does not appear natural and the reverse shows (in this pic) no luster at all. Very possibly cleaned. Must be sent for verification.

I do know that as long as they were in my father's possession, they were never cleaned, or even touched, as they have been stored in a museum quality intercept Shield for decades, I believe. He knows not to clean rare coins, and he said when he acquired it, it was said to be AU+ by other collectors from his club at the time, and no mention of cleaning. It's hard to see the color and luster in these photos, I might try to get a video of them in varying lighting.

I would grade the 1877 at AU-58. The 1909S MS-63BN. Two very lovely coins! They do not look cleaned to me. It seems lighting is playing a role in the colors, but I can't be 100% sure unless I had them in hand.

Looks to have been cleaned. AU-53 details. I really like the 1909-S Looks to be MS-63. If the other coins look to be as nice as these, the complete set would be quite valuable.

It's all my father's.. but it's being listed on a friend's Etsy store. My dad has pieced it all together over the last several decades, but financial situations dictate that he needs to sell it. He is adamant that he wants to keep the collection together as a set, but other people are saying it would be worth more split up. A local dealer was going to give him $7,000 for the whole set, or $1,000 for the 1877, although it seems that he was underestimating the conditions and values, and factoring in a large markup for himself.. but a couple of other local collectors looked at it in person and said there's no way he should sell it for any less than double that, minimum. They also said they have never seen any in this good of condition before. He had some offers for various coins in the set, but like I said, he keeps insisting that the set stays together if at all possible. A couple people seem interested in paying 12 to $14,000 for the set, as of now, that have contacted us through Etsy. I'm going to work on getting some more decent images of all of the coins in close up, And possibly some video as well, tonight.
