not sure how it could have been cleaned, unless it was well before they were in my father's possession, and it wasn't noticed before. I'll get some more photos and video of it and the rest, and maybe that can help clear up everything one way or another on it all. We have interest in the set for 12 to $14,000, which is what our friend listed it for an Etsy, but after I researched things more, and going by a couple other collectors' opinions who saw it in person, I'm thinking that could even be underpriced? They said we should never let it go for less than 14k, if not well more.

AU-50 Details, cleaned. I'd have it certified by a TPG.

If the other coins in the set are as nice as these the whole set is way underpriced at 12 to 14k$. Do not short change your Dad by selling it on the cheap. Take your time and get a few more opinions before you sell it. Once it's sold its gone!

Yes the most of the other coins are as good, with several even better.. it could be worth more than 14K? Seriously?! Wow. I am in the process of taking better pictures of each coin right now.

Sounds like a fantastic IHC set. He definitely would do better by getting some of the coins graded by PCGS or NCG, then selling them separately. If he is sentimental about keeping his collection intact, you might remind him that whoever buys it will almost certainly break the set up anyway.

Selling it intact will just get your dad less money but sounds like he doesn't mind that. It's gonna get broken up pretty quickly after it's sold. Why sell it on Etsy ?

Sounds like enough collectors have already given you ideas of the grades and values. Not sure what you expect to get here. If your Dad wants top dollar for the set the coins need to go to one of the main TPG's for grading and encapsulation. It can still be sold as a set in the slabs and I am sure he will get much higher prices for the set once professionally graded.

To reply to both of the above, the Etsy store is the only venue we had available to list it on with a decent history of 5-star feedback, we don't have an ebay account, and would take years to build up adequate feedback to even think about offering something like this there and expect anyone to actually bid on it.. Etsy does have an entire category for antique coins, believe it or not. they are not just the marketplace for handmade goods anymore, they're expanding fairly rapidly. I think they take a much lower commission than ebay does, as well, and offer way more payment choices. As far as the opinions on value, I never really got a solid value on even the 1877, which I'm sure better pictures and possibly video might help with, so I am now in the process of taking much better pictures and video of all of the valuable coins in the set, to see what everyone thinks the whole set might be worth. Like I said, we have a pending offer for 12 to $14,000 for the whole set, but some have said that might still be well underpriced, so it would be good to know before we let it go for any amount. As far as professional grading, the whole point that he needs to sell the set is because of financial issues, there's no way professional grading could be afforded right now, until he can sell the set, of course.

If it were me I would sent to Great Collections who will take care of TPG grading, and even CAC submittal and then auction it for you. The grading fees will be taken out of the proceeds, and they will even give you a cash advance. That's the only way to achieve market value. They have auctions every week.

removing the coins from the book and taking your photos straight on in natural light will help. the 77 looks AU58 whether its cleaned or not cant tell with these photos the 09S I'm in the MS63 camp as well. it could go RB but again the lighting is not good enough to tell for sure

I have the first page of the set done, the pics are more work than I thought.. Have to go to a Christmas production this afternoon so I will finish later tonight.. I think hi-def video in various lighting might help assess it all better, also. Trying to prevent it from overexposing though.... not easy.

I agree with jimbucks either great collection, Heritage or Stacks? Give them a call and talk to them about what you have for sure. Once their gone their gone and you will be upset forever it you rush this and don't get what you feel is a fair offer.

Hi all, again!
Wow, didn't realize how long it's been.. I wanted to update everyone on everything happening with the Indian Head set.. Yes, I did get more pictures, but in the process I started talking to Ian, President of Great Collections, who said this was something they would definitely be interested in, and we have been in contact ever since. We finally got it together to ship to him insured Registered Mail.. He said he was really impressed with the set, and he then called my dad and they talked about it a bit, and discussed the history of the set and so forth.. So.. everything was sent to NGC for grading. Ian said he thought the 1877 could have been cleaned long ago,but couldn't tell for sure. The NGC grades just came back.. and most graded higher than we even expected! However, a lot specified a cleaned designation, which we didn't expect. Only one said "Harshly", (the 1867/67 - FS-301). The 1877 was graded AU Details, "cleaned". The question is, how much will that reduce the value? Everyone was correct aout the AU grade, though, it seems. The 1909-S which you all thought was around MS-63, came back as "UNC" details, with OBV scratched. It's a bit confusing.. Is UNC Uncirculated better than MS-63? And if so, how much? I see different scales depending where you look. (And no one who has looked at it, even the professional dealer in person, noticed any scratch!). So what would the value be estimated to be going by this? Even though almost all of the coins came back with even higher letter grades than anyone expected, what effect will these "details" designations (mostly supposed "cleaning", and a couple environmental, and the "obv scratched" on the 1909-S), have on overall value? Again, sorry for the long delay in updating on everything, please let me know what all of you think about everything. Thanks..
