This is an inherited coin. I know Fat Man dollars have been extensively counterfeited, and I don't know how to tell if it's genuine. It was with a couple of China memento dollars. The diameter and weight are correct, but are there any markers that would indicate authenticity or a fake? Edited by Zurie 12/09/2018 2:48 pm

Yes. Seems to be perfectly ok to me. Let me know if you wish to sell any Chinese dollars. I am always on the hunt for new stock for my business.

@zurie, you didn't mention it, but is it safe to assume that you confirmed this piece isn't attracted to a magnet?

@Spence, thanks for that link. I had looked at some other Fat Man threads, but I didn't see that one. I just counted the denticles, and there are 101 wide denticles and 100 thin denticles on the obverse, same as the coin in that thread. My eyes tired out before I got to the reverse. I assume it still might be counterfeit, but it looks good to me, too. Thanks everyone for your opinions!

In the 1990's I use to have trouble getting $20 for one of these.

I don't think you need to count dentils here. This is a legit coin with what appears to be an unusually dark patina. Perhaps it is just the image.
This is a nice XF-AU specimen.

The dark patina is actually pretty accurate. I like the look of it, and I'm glad the consensus seems to be genuine. When I have time, I'll post some photos of those Chinese memento dollars.

I had posted this coin a few years ago, and I finally decided to send it in last month for authentication and encapsulation, mainly because it's an heirloom piece and I wanted to make sure it was genuine. I was surprised at the grade--shows how little I know about grading foreign coins...

Congratulations, Zurie! It would be a good idea to write up the family history of this coin on paper to be included with the slab for your heirs.

Very nice result! It's great to have a questioned coin come back as it did! I have so many look-a-likes sometimes it's hard for me to offer an earlier opinion on a photo alone. I can only think of a couple or very few look-a-likes I've had over the years that ended up being genuine.

Thanks everyone. I'm obviously pleased with the result. @Hondo, it was passed down by my father, and I believe he had it for many years. But I don't have any history beyond that, so I guess the family history will start with him.

I was reading back and also underestimated the grade. I very much like the color and look of this example. Congrats to you.
