*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

This is my very first post. My wife and I have been putting pennies in jars for 20 years. We finally decided to look at them. I think I found a s over d mint mark. I think it has doubling on the lettering on both sides. I am wondering about the ear also. I am truly a novice, but hope to learn. jmewrites

@jmewrites, first welcome to CCF. Second, I see shelf-like doubling which makes me think that you have common Mechanical Doubling (MD).

Note the motto. It is showing extreme die wear. The mint mark post looks altered and broken a bit. The only 'S' mint punch was used on San Francisco Proof coins.

There is also a Die Deterioration issue going on "IGWT", do to a worn die, from striking planchets at the U.S. Mint. This happens, when the die starts to age and slowly breaks down.

Don't stop looking. I saved pennies in a 4 foot long 4" PVC pipe. After 20 years I finally filled it up. I figure about 12,000 pennies.
