I posted this original 1856 Seated dollar in the grading section a month ago. It was auctioned off by Heritage yesterday. I was planning on being a competitive bidder. I knew it was going to sell for a premium but not to this ridiculous extent.
Yeah I think this more than anything confirms the bifurcation of the rare coin market. Rare coins with original surfaces can achieve astronomical values at auction while the coins with 'monkeyed' surfaces continue to hammer at obsolete price guide values.
This example isn't a particularly attractive coin, but when you look at the others that sold at auction for this date, folks can kind of understand why. I experienced the same thing with my 62 sld acquisition. But on this one with which I thought had crappy eye appeal, I just wasn't willing to pay up to the 4k level.
