but what makes it a loonie? I see no Loon on the coin
The name applies to all Canadian small golden dollars.

growing up in michigan, it was common to find canadian coins in circulation-- quarters, dimes, nickels, cents-- but this is the first time I've ever seen and actually held a loonie in my hand. I've picked a number of interesting canadian coins from parking lots here over the years.

The regular circulating dollar coins have a loon on them. The one MrPink found was one of the many types of circulating commemorative dollars.

Similar to my experience in Wisconsin too - especially cents but occasionally other denominations too. I've always pulled them all out of circulation, ever since I learned at a young age that technically they aren't legal tender in the US, and I don't accept them from my customers at work either.

I acquired most of mine when I lived there, or in Minnesota, or in Washington (State).

after numerous consecutive sub-par nights, tonight I picked $1.74, including my first wild bill in weeks, and I think I might get an extra point for this capture as it was a leaner:

it was just hangin' out, leaning against the curb... my first leaner, an easy pick.

hey, I think that was mine - it must have dropped from my clenched fist!
I can prove it - it has a picture of George Washington on the other side! right?
