last night I had my best night since 8/8, pickin $2.18 in well-scattered change, and here's a couple shots of some gleaming disks from last night: twenty-three cents there, I nearly blew past it.. a lone quarter in the middle of a huge empty parking lot here's the most interesting thing I've picked in many weeks: i posted that in the counterstamp thread earlier today.. the coin has a little roadrash.. the obverse is orange, not copper-colored, and the reverse has a darker look when you look at it straight-on, like it had been baked, but a paler look when tipped into the light just right, showing speckled/splotchy red & blue toning.. the most exciting zincoln I've seen in a while, lol... i accidentally discovered something interesting about a soda machine last night, but to explain it I need a picture or two, so when I go out tonight I'm gonna stop & nab a few pix at said soda machine, and come back here with the story... it's a soda machine I check every night for coins in the coin return..

yes! hopefully tonight will be the same.. I'm needing just $4.. and we have a tropical entity entering our region over the next 24-48 hrs, I'm expecting some wet weather tuesday, wednesday and maybe thursday, so it'd be nice if I could put the wraps on this cycle pronto, I have a paint job I would like to begin as soon as the storm goes by... actually, I just checked the updated info to find we are under a tropical storm watch, though it'd be the lower end of intensity.. torrential downpours and gusty winds are possible for the next few days & nights, and it only takes several seconds of rain to wreck the search...

hopefully that thing will just pass us by well to the west. it is becoming increasingly likely that it'll undergo rapid intensification as it moves into the SE GoM, over the deeper & warmer waters of the loop current. so far, the warning cone's easternmost edge is 50 or 60 miles west of the dry tortugas, which is 70 miles west of key west.. the warning cone hasn't crept eastward since it was posted. tonight I scored $1.47 in well-scattered change. another $2.88 is needed to hit the target amount. so any day now... there are 4 days left in the month. I need to score at least $1.44 each night for the month's total to hit $31, which would put the daily average at $1. here's a close-up picture of the coin return on a soda machine: the upper grey part is the end of the chute. the lower black part is the cup. change rattles down the chute and lands in the cup, ideally. the issue with this machine, I discovered, is that the black part and the grey part have separated, leaving a quarter-inch gap between them. i noticed a few years ago that sometimes coins get stuck in the chute, they don't always make it into the cup. I can get my index finger to partially corkscrew up into the chute, and I sometimes find a coin (or two) stuck in there. that's what happened last night. I jammed my finger up into the end of the chute and my fingertip located a coin. I flicked it out of the chute on the third try, the coin- a quarter- rattled down into the cup and dropped down through the gap, which I didn't realize was there at first. I thought I had just seen a magic trick. I saw the quarter come down into the cup and it disappeared. lol, I wasn't prepared for a magic trick. I heard the coin land on something, and then I heard it slide or roll a very short bit. frowning, wondering where my quarter just went, I stuck my hand into the rectangular hole where the cans & bottles dispense, but upward, and my fingers discovered a lip or ledge up in there, and that's where my quarter landed. I picked it out easily. I also found a nickel in there. that soda machine is one of a pair of soda machines I check each night. oddly enough, when I checked those machines tonight, one yielded a quarter and the other yielded a nickel, but both coins were stuck up in the chute rather than sitting in the cup.

tonight I scored $2.58 in well-scattered change, the best pick tonight happened at the very end of the hunt.. I had $1.33 in my pocket at the end of the route & had just rolled through the last ride-through before heading home, and saw nothing there, so I continued rolling, grinding my teeth, on my way out, thru the parking areas toward the exit and I spied two big gleaming disks in the drive.. looked like quarters! cool!! I scored two quarters and a nickel at the taco bell drive-up area earlier, how nice to find a couple more.. well.. it looked like two quarters, and I picked them up without directly looking at them as I assumed they were both quarters, but one did not feel like a quarter; it was a dollar coin! (someone chucked $1.25...) the 6th president, Ebenezer Scrooge John Quincy Adams... as of tonight my running total is within $1 of the target. now I begin making preparations to turn all that base metal and paper-- $186.67-- into gold.

august minutiae: the most interesting coins I found all month were the two things I recently posted: the counterstamped zincoln and the presidential coin. I found only one $1 bill and 3 bottles of water in august. there were also several food items. of the month's 31 days, 18 were days of having found less than a dollar; there were no less than 6 rain days, resulting in 4 zero nights. all the rain during the 10th through the 21st minimized my finds. of the 31 days, 8 were $1+, 4 were $2+, and only 1 was $3+. the total for the 31 days: $30.01, resulting in a daily average of $0.968; I failed to find a dollar a night in august, but the $30.01 advances the cycle's running total to $188.84, so the running total has caught up to my gold target, and I'm step by step completing the conversion. i have a paint job to do, starts monday, so I have to take a brief hiatus from my nightly searches. I will, of course, be feeding the cats each night, though i'll do it earlier, and then just boogie on home, earlier, to get to bed earlier, allowing me to get up earlier and get a good day in on that paint job. i'll get back to pickin after that job is complete. I can still go out and pick tonight & tmrw, but not sunday or after.. but maybe on the weekends.. depends.. I have to knock out that job quickly cos I have other jobs piled up behind that one. those jobs will pay better than this upcoming job, and i'd like to get to them quickly, cos that'll also allow me to get back to pickin. quickly. I know what i'll be missing. it'd be nice if I can find at least $1.16 tonight, that'd roll the total up to $190...

nice way to start a new month; I scored $1.66 in well-scattered change, plus a bottle of water. running total is $190.50 and moving past the target amount. i just realized monday is a national holiday. LOL, the irony; I can't begin a paint job on Labor Day... i'll delay until tuesday. great! i'll get to squeeze in one more night of pickin. i rolled up to a soda machine tonight and saw this, I was amused by it & thought it worthy of a picture. I found no coins at the machine, but... ...there was a gecko inside the machine...
