Hey everyone, I am new to the forum, but I have been collecting for as long as I can remember. I work retail, so I come across many interesting coins through transactions, and today I had an interesting one come through. It's a 1935 p Wheat penny in average condition, however on the reverse the text across the top is split through the middle with the line continuing down to the bottom. It's not the double die obverse variety that I can tell, so I have a feeling it is just PMD, but there is no major damage on the front of the coin indicating any sort of vice or surface it was pressed into. I was wondering if I could get a few opinions. Thanks.

Your coin at some point was an end coin in the roll and what you see is a damage done by the paper wrapping machine!

Ah. Yes. That makes sense to me. I would never have thought about that. Thanks! I'm hoping to start CRH soon, so I expect I will be finding this more often. Kinda cool, but also a bit of a bummer. I appreciate the reply.

It could be a coin counter or a Gumball Machine. But either way it was normal after the strike. Damaged along the way.

Wouldn't the coin rolling machine leave the ring more towards the center of the coin ?

I had that thought too, however the damage does seem to be pretty consistent with the roller machine damage seen on other coins, especially some of the examples of nickles I've found. But again, more centralized, not near the rim.

I it might depend on the roller machine used. Some might roll towards the middle, some more towards the edge. Like Coop said, it could be some sort of other machine as well.

Yea, I'm in complete agreement with the idea. It makes more sense than a mint error. I do appreciate everyone's help with this.

@Cowsertc, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes it is PMD, but a Wheat cent is still worth a little more than face value so you've got a keeper.
