I kept tossing this penny to the side because the obverse was coated in something that looked like melted candy but I figured if I was going to toss it I may as well see what was underneath so I chipped it of with my fingernail cause I just had to see.

Sorry but I only see damage. Those linear marks near LIBERTY are just scratches in the coin. Also--thank you for rotating your images--that helps!

Thanks for the reply I really appreciate everyone who takes the time. What I found odd if that is a scratch is why did it take off the end of the e it should just run through it? And there is the big divot in the head.

My observation is a straight on hit, not a sideways scratch. I think POSSIBLE Struck Through. I see a gradual entrance AND exit of the mark. I think a scratch would show at least one end with a sharp entrance, if it were a scratch. I also don't see any residual leftover marks from the displaced E. The E appears to be smashed into the face of the coin. You can see remnants of the E where it should be. Also notice the ends of the E go both ways from the E. If it were a scratch they would both go the same way.
I'm convinced it's a Strike Through.

To me this looks like a scratch. Why do I think that? Because if it were a hit, the sides of the hit would have raised higher. This look like the scratch took off the field and cut right through the 'E'. If it had been a hit there, there would have been a valley there and a raised area on each side. Also note the bottom of the trench is flat. A hit would have made curved area, not flat.

Coop, look again, there is a rise on both side of the mark, what is causing the shadow ? Also explain the E damage extending both ways ?
Would a round object make a flat bottom trench ? The extra relief at the letter E would also cause less pressure at that point so not as deep of a trench.
You can also see that the E is pushed up and downward plus to the left.

The upper shadow implies to me a rounded indent, with light coming from the right.
Remnants of the compressed E, and direction E was pushed.

One more observation. If it were a scratch would you see a slight deflection after the contact with the E, it seems very consistent on both sides. More in line with a strike from straight on.

I know what I'm talking about.

It will raise on a scratch, but rises a lot on a hit. Note the example above.
