The article says that for years the US Mint denied that 1943 copper cents existed. It shows you that you can't always believe what the mint says.

It really goes against my grain when the cent is referred to a "penny".  Only 20 were made? Was someone counting them? I have heard the story before that he found it in 1947,  four years after it was minted, but probably was taken from someone's collection and spent. It should bring a hefty price, but not $1M. Yes the penny was found in 1947. So he probably sold it for a dollar.

Estimates from the non coin press are crazy! See this prediction of a click bait article at $1.7 million. https://www.geek.com/culture/rare-p...ion-1768904/Just because a similar coin dated 1943, that was also bronze instead of steel sold once for that doesn't mean they all sell for that, more likely now the high dollar buyer has one the price will only fall. Most of the media is comparing this AU Philly bronze cent to the MS Denver Bronze Cent, in which there has been only one identified so far, as a Million Dollar coin.

I was watching this auction. Unfortunately my wife wouldn't let me take out a second mortgage  . It's an interesting story of how Don Lutes Jr found it in his school cafeteria change in 1947 and held on all these decades later. HA makes it sound like it was Don who decided to sell it, but I heard he passed away last year so it may have been his heir. |
