Hi Everyone, How are ya? I'm good and it's been forever> Ihope Everyone had a very awesome, nice Christmas and New year's eve holiday too? Anyway I just got this very nice Roman Republican silver coin L. Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus 100 BC. More about him: Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus (c. 100 BC - 43 BC) was a Roman senator and the father-in-law of Julius Caesar through his daughter Calpurnia. He was reportedly a follower of a school of Epicureanism that had been modified to befit politicians, as Epicureanism itself favored withdrawal from politics. Piso was consul in the year 58 BC with Aulus Gabinius as his colleague. Also about the coin: Date: 100 B.C.
Denomination: AR Denarius.
Diameter: 17 mm.
Weight: 3.76 grams.
Mint: Rome.
Obverse: Laureate head of Saturn right; behind, harpa; around, PISO CAEPIO Q.
Reverse: Two male figures seated on bench, side by side; to left and right, corn ear; in exergue, AD. FRV. EMV / EX. SC.
Reference: Crawford 330/1a; Sydenham 603.

Interesting coin. I assume it started its life nominally round. Do you have a sense whether it was broken up purposefully (i.e. to make small change) or just was accidentally damaged over the millennia?

Hello Doc, it's been a while. It's good that you were able to ID this coin with what was left of it. It's difficult to say if was purposely broken to make small change or occurred naturally.
