I'm pretty sure that the mark on the dime on the left is the S mint mark, located between "DIME" and the wreath. It looks so similar to the S below the wreath on the other dime in the photo.

Even a regular 1903 S Barber dime is somewhat rare, but too bad mine is in such crappy condition. Would you call that AG-2?

I am unaware of a 1902S dime with the MM above the wreath, but then I'm unaware of a lot of things! Experts please correct me!

I would grade this FR-02.

That is an S, just a counterfiet one. Added after striking.

That could explain why it's so weak. It's gotten so weak by now that I would guess that it was done when the coin was in better condition. Maybe it was detected and then the coin was junked.

Why put the mark in the wrong place? To make it seem even more rare?

This issue led me to this:

I'm confused. Coin says 1902. Typo?
There was a taller, thinner S 1912-1916 but never in that location. Maybe the alteration dates to the 1930s or 40s when coin albums became popular and people needed that 1902-S hole filled. But why go to the trouble of putting it in the wrong spot?

Yes, I should have entitled it "1902" and not "1903."

I think 1875 was the last year they had the mintmark inside the wreath. (The Barber dime used the same rev design as the 1860 to 1891 Seated dime)
