Hello All. Recently found this in a mixture of items and was curious if anyone had any ideas. I suspect it to be some sort of memorial medal of the named person. The N.N.V. I was unable to find anything that really matched. The most common was the Natal Naval Voulenteers from the Boers War, but the timeframe is off. Front: N.N.V. John, J. Keating 3-27-16 8-20-91 Reverse: Fingerprint Seems to be Tin or an alloy. Not silver Any ideas are welcome?

I have never seen anything like that!
I assume that you have done a name search on Google?

Name search is a bit generic. All people I've found do not seem to match the dates on the medal.

Hmm, in a quick search I can't find a John J. Keating that was born on March 27, 1916 and died August 20, 1991. I did find that the US Navy at one point issued dog tags with the soldier's fingerprint etched on one side. Clearly not the same as this example, but perhaps going at it from a military angle might help find more info. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthope...g-1848894471

Might not be your fingerprint, but that fingerprint makes it unique and easily identifiable, if it happens to be stolen.

Thank you all for the feedback.
I think Spence is pretty close with it. Maybe a memento for a WWII vet since it is in a similar style as the dogtag listed.
Did quite a bit of digging through National Archives and WW2 databases and no matches for John J Keating that match the dates on the tag.
I'll just assume its Robin William's character from Dead Poet's Society until proven otherwise, hah

The date follows the US format of month-day-year. I suggest that South Africa during British Empire times is more likely to have followed the British convention of day-month-year.
Where/who else uses the US format? This may give an idea of where to start researching.
