I'm in the process of putting together a Civil War era set of IHCs, which would be a total of 7 coins. I like the idea of doing short sets because it's a little more cost effective than trying to put together an entire mint and date set and it can be accomplished a little more quickly.

Is anyone else putting together short sets out there? I suppose type sets would fall in this category as well.

Hi Mike, yes I am also putting small sets of wheats and memorial in sets of twenty and have broken up the Indians into two as the early ones are just too hard to find over here. Each set of twenty are mounted in a frame with a clear overlay with year/mintages and details of the particular set.
regards

That's a good idea Roger. What condition do you collect them in, then? AU and above? And did you build the frame itself or buy it somewhere?

How about short type sets?

I have a Whitman plastic "year set" holder with holes for cent through half dollar. I labelled it "Small Change: 1857" and it contains a Half Cent, large cent, FE cent, Three Cent piece, and Half Dime. They are all EF 1857 coins.

I have a number of similar 'short type sets.'

That's a great idea, too.

Hi mklpatrick, thanks for your comment. The condition (because of limited access) is the best possible condition available and I use MDF board drill the coin size holes and place an overhead clear sheet with the laser-printed details and framed in an A4 photo frame. I am working on coin-cabinets for the entire collection. It sounds elaborate but just looks more tidier and provides easier access.

I guess you can call my 4 coin 20¢ set a short set. I can put 3 of those together.

I'm working on copper nickel IHCs. Easy to get in lower grades, a challenge in higher grades. Also a nice heft and feel, and lots of color variation. I love em.

I am working on the short set of Buffalo nickels from 34 to 38. There are only 12 coins I believe and they are the last years which are not too expensive but I am doing them in MS65 and MS66 so it still is getting up there in price.

M9Frank, I picked up an 1860 IHC yesterday in VG condition. I'm pretty happy with it as it has no dings or discoloration anywhere, just the usual even wear. I'll have to get a pic of it online soon.

I recently finished a war years set of Mercury dimes (1941-1945) and am working backwards to try to get a full set (minus the keys - I'm not that rich). The grades are mixed, but I try to shoot for EF or better and so far most have cost <$2.

I'm also starting on a set of 1946-1964 Roosevelt dimes - again with a budget around $2 each. These are both just fun, affordable, little sets.

For EF or better at less than $2 is a great price. I think the least I paid was $5 in AU for those years.

I've made a few sort of short sets. I use the Whitman Classic album covers and use their blank pages. With the gold press on letters and numbers I've made such things as a Jefferson nickel album with only one of each year and all either D's or P's. No proofs either. I made a similar one for Roosevelt dimes. I got the idea at a coin show where a dealer was selling a Lincoln Cent set in such an album and made up of only the Phily coins and all in MS grades. One for each year and no errors, proofs, etc. Since Whitman sells the album covers I've been thinking of making a few more like that.
