At the top of the PCGS page it reads what I wrote in this thread's subject line but the coin itself grades out at a 58.

Can anyone explain why this coin sold for more than $ 2?. I really must be missing something here?

Likely a misprint. Then there is this one.

Only thing that comes to mind is if these are 40% silver versions.

"MS" in this context is "Mint Strike" as apposed to "PR" for "Proof".

If you click up through the tree a couple of links, you'll land at https://www.PCGS.com/auctionprices/...ke-dollar/31 where they make the distinction.

Edit to add: ...but I see your point. Without seeing the coin in question, I can't say for sure. Could be pedigree or something else on the label. But this case is hardly alone -- there's an MS63 that sold for over $14k back in 2001 listed at https://www.PCGS.com/auctionprices/...pe-1-ms/7420

I'd have to guess silver planchet error. A Type 2 AU55 sold on Heritage for $8225 in 2016. I also noticed PCGS lists auction record as $14375 for MS63 on their CoinFacts, also Bowers & Merina.

I see jimbucks edit beat me to it.

Yep, 40% silver planchets must be the answer. But what the heck are 40% silver planchets doing at the Denver mint?

According to the Ike Group, there were some 1974D's minted in silver also. Since San Francisco only made Copper Nickel proofs, the rejected planchets were sent to Denver instead of scrapping them. Apparently some silver planchets got mixed in with them.

Why did they send them to Denver?

I gather because it would have been cheaper to transport them from San Francisco to Denver than all the way across the country to Philly (since both mints used the planchets for circulation strikes)........ But this is only my guess.
