The Great American Coin Hunt is set for April 21-27, 2019. Dealers around the country will each be releasing into circulation, on average, about 2000 collectible coins. Mostly wheat cents, Buffalo nickels, Indian cents will be released, but some dealers will release key dates, or affix holograms to the released coins that give instructions on how to exchange for a key date. Some dealers will be releasing 25,000 obsolete coins into circulation.

I am very excited about this venture! It can definitely stimulate old and new collectors alike and hopefully increase enthusiasm for numismatics in general. This is an incredible opportunity to take part in this event.

Additionally, there is that thrill of the hunt. Many of the released coins will be through local business, restaurants, not through coin roll searching at banks.

I strongly suggest (urge) you to participate in this amazing event. Either by becoming involved in the searching, or by looking through your own collection and finding some extra, collectible, but common obsolete coins you really don't need anymore and placing them into circulation during the week of April 21-27.

My apologies if someone else has posted this, but I searched and did not see this posted on the site yet. If this belongs in a better category, feel free to move it for optimum exposure.

I would also ask anyone that plans to participate in this event and in what way, to please post here in this thread. If you are going to release some obsolete coins, tells us what types, about how many and approximately where (city).

What an interesting idea.

Sadly, that would not work well in Canada due to the Alloy recovery program sucking copper, nickel and silver out of the system to be melted. I might release something if it was going to a good home, not a melting pot.

I think it will be great publicity for the hobby! Yes, I don't think this will work as well in many other countries.

The question is, how well publicized will it be? If it doesn't reach the masses but is only well publicized to the people that already collect, it isn't going to have much effect.

Good point Conder101, I have to wonder how much this is going to be noticed by your average guy out there.

I've posted this before but it's been a while, it's just something I used to do when my kids were young. I used to carry around old foreign coins when I went to the school or the kids section of the local library, wherever, and just drop a few here and there. Most of the time I didn't get to see who wound up with it but occasionally I'd hear some kid pointing out the old coin they found to a parent and it was pretty cool to see it when they get jacked up about it, wondering if it was worth anything usually. I have no idea if anything came of it but who knows. So, if you hang around areas with a high concentration of short people and you have a lot of odds and ends hanging around (who doesn't) you could do worse than dropping them for a possible future collector to find.

This sounds like a great event to drum up publicity for the hobby. But of course it has to be the week before I go on vacation out of the country.

Interesting concept. I had not heard of this before seeing this post. So I assume it might be a flop if the main news outlets do not pick it up and give it some publicity.

The membership of the River Cities Coin Club of Huntington WV will be participating in the Great American Coin Hunt. We should have more info as to types and numbers after our March meeting. Membership was very excited and eager to further promote our great hobby.
Rest in Peace

Look for an increase in new members excited to ask us how rare is the (fill in the blank) coin they found in change.

I hope this idea puts a little jolt and excitement into the hobby. We need more collectors, especially under 35 of age.

This web site has updated the GACH, and there are nice links to maps where coin dealers are participating. Collectors can participate too. Some states are not yet represented on the map site, so if you live in one of those states, please consider participating.

The goals of the GACH are to:
Inspire a new generation of coin collectors and dealers. From kids to adults, we will make searching your coins fun again.
Increase traffic to local "mom and pop" coin shops.
To gain national media attention to our hobby and profession.

A secondary goal is to try to get folks to use cash over digital payment forms for one week.
