Ok, so I shared this on the British section, but it may be better suited over here.. does anybody have any thoughts on this coin? Anything jumping out about the actual 8 reale coin regarding authenticity?

I tried highlighting the full Internet address in xxmarkabyx's post and by copying this and pasting it into the Internet Browser I was able to view the web page.

Folks with far more knowledge should chime in here but from my perspective this is a forgery.

To me that date looks all wrong. The privy mark seems ok but hard to tell from the pics. I also especially don't like those two dentils on the reverse at 3 o'clock, by the 'N' of 'Hispan'. There are other things I dislike but those stuck out me.

The key thing is the countermark. Does it look authentic? Do your homework and look at as many certified examples as you can. If the countermark looks genuine (they were heavily counterfeited at the time and there are many examples of less than accurate countermarks) then at worse you have a genuine countermark on a contemporary counterfeit host (and there is ample proof that this did happen).

Unfortunately, the seller scanned the coin in such a way that the surface of the coin is in focus but the countermark is not in focus. Try to request a picture where the countermark is in focus.

A contemporary description of these coins "the head of a fool on the neck of an ass"

On the obverse we see raised metal dots and the weight is not supplied. These are best purchased as PCGS/NGCcertified. True there can still be some doubt. This appears as MODERN and from a modern Chinese casting method as described in my new book FORGOTTEN COINS in the chapter of Chinese counterfeits.

Thank you everyone! Yeah, I had a feeling something looked off with the actual coin, but I'm no expert in the area. I'm going to wait around for a graded example or buy one from someone reputable
