An article I have seen said the U.S. mint did indeed produce some 1997 quarters (not bicentennial) but the shipment got mixed in with S.Vietnamese coins and were melted down by the N.Vietnamese. True?

I don't know if it's true or not. This is the first time that I've ever heard this.

I can personally confirm that the U.S. Mint did indeed mint 1997 non-bicemtenial quarter dollars. Not sure how many were melted down in North Vietnam.

I believe that the U.S. Mint last produced coins for a foreign country in 1984. Since that Time, our Mint has struck coins exclusively for the United States. Might be wrong though.

I assume we're talking about 1976/1977 and not 1996/97?

I have actually found quarters from 1997 while roll hunting so I can confirm they were minted

I'm confused. What's special about 1997 quarters? Weren't there, like, a billion of these?

Maybe the OP has mistaken the US for Canada. No Canadian quarters were struck for circulation in 1997. But the Vietnamese connection ......?

I have 1997 quarters in my collection and they were not hard to find. The 1976 quarter was produced in both 1975 and 1976 as the Bicentennial so no 1975. These I heard were done as a joke.

Those 1975 Kennedys (at least some of them) are overstrikes by Daniel Carr -- they show up occasionally on ebay and can sell in the $60-$90 range.

I think sjcruiser was a little confused about the dates. He did mention Quote: (not bicentennial) but used 1996 in his subject line and 1997 in the body of his post. sjcruiser please clear up what date you are speaking of.
