Here's a 1921 dated 50 pfennig note that commemorates the 400th anniversary of an important event in Martin Luther's life. Already excommunicated by Pope Leo X, the secular authority of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, was then brought to bear in proscribing Luther in terms that made his life essentially forfeit. The scene of the back of the note is captioned "Luther's Capture" which was in fact a sham abduction staged at the direction of Prince Frederick III. Luther was then spirited away to the safety of Wartburg Castle at Eisenach, where, while carrying on his philosophical and doctrinal war with the Church, he also translated the New Testament into German. Colligo ergo sum

That is a great-looking note, Lucky Cuss, and the history behind it is very interesting. Plus, it makes me giggle to say "fünfzig."

I was looking through the Notgeld lot that I picked up a little while back. Knew I'd seen the 'Martin Luther' note posted by Lucky Cuss, I have 2 of the 50 pfennig in the set. Hope it's ok to add these pics to the thread. I've only posted the reverse side of my notes.

Although Notgeld really isn't my thing (got to draw the line somewhere in terms of what to collect) I must admit the examples posted are very impressive for their detailed designs & historical significance.

There are 2 basic sets of 6 pieces. One set has no lettering and the other does, as below: L U T H E R If you are lucky, you can also stumble upon specimen or 'musterscheine' pieces, as below:

They even call it 'Luthergeld' - Luther money. The 6 x 50pf pieces would be worth 3m, but here it states, 'price with envelope is 3m & 20pf'! The issuers of such pieces knew that they would not be handed in or redeemed! Today, there are still several notgeld presentation sets to be had by collectors.......fairly easy to locate and for relatively small prices.

Here is a lovely set of 8, again issued in Eisenach. The purple coloured note features Martin Luther:

Eisenach was/is proud to be associated with Luther, obviously. At age 15, Luther is known to have been at Eisenach - I have written about him relating to a set from Wittenberg in my book 'German Gems - The encyclopedia of German notgeld'.. The Lutherhaus in Eisenach is one of the oldest surviving half-timbered houses in Thuringia. Tradition holds that Martin Luther lived there with the Cotta family during his schooldays from 1498 to 1501. (just found that last bit out from the internet!)
