I found this 2018 National Parks quarter for Pictured Rocks. The center of the letter P is missing. Not sure if it is from a die chip or from over polishing.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

To CCF! I was gonna say that it was caused by Post Strike Damage ( PSD), but I am not sure myself. I would love to see the other members input on this one.

Thinking device is incused. See some debris to the left of device along the inner design rim. May some of that filled it in as well? Thanks, Doug.

Halo1st:

It is an incused design. However, what may be hard to tell from the photo is that the part of the letter P is actually missing. There is a hole where the filled portion of the P should be.

I also see the debris, which could be part of the missing letter fill, might not be. Hard to tell.

Thanks.

I've not seen this before. But my guess is that because the devices are raised on the die, the die may have had the center (open area on the device) filled with grease. Thus preventing the strike of the central area of that device. Also looks like grease was also involved on the rim area as well.
