Looks like its trying to look like a celtic imitation of a GLORIA EXERCITVS (2 soldiers) coin. But the type isn't distinguishable and it doesn't look like any imitation I've ever seen - also, the flan looks a little too regular for my liking - the lip is too square. Pretty interesting, anyway, worth having for 'very VERY cheap'!

Hmm. Why couldn't you just say it was modern junk created in a small workshop in China... Why did you have to say Celtic...

Weight: 5 gr

Is there any chance that this is a heck of an old coin?

Pretty unlikely, I think it has been struck on a modern planchet - it's wide, heavy and regular, which just wasn't the case back then. At this size, it would probably be chisel cut, or struck very hot and therefore bulged at the edge. If you want actual imitations by actual barbarians, they are very cheap too, if you are willing to clean them yourself. That being said, ones of this size are hard to find - I have only cleaned one this big and was foolish enough to sell it afterwards.

I've seen barbarous coins in something very close to this style.

I have never seen a barbarous coin so perfectly round, with such clean edges, and weighing anything close to 5 grams - 1-2 grams is more typical.

I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure this is a modern creation. Maybe it was made for jewelry, maybe it was made for a tourist trinket shop?

Thanks all! You guys are the best.

Last question: Is there anything to say about the writing? Is it gibrish or can we at least somewhat pinpoint the ancient coin it was based on?

@MK, do you actually mean 25.0 mm?

I was thinking a 250 mm diameter coin would have to be a fake, that's the size of a dinner plate

I have never seen a modern imitation of a barbarous coin before.
Interesting.

I don't think it's intended to imitate an imitation, as it were. It's just a poorly executed "tourist fake".

I do believe I recognize the portrait, however...

I reckon that it will be a fine museum piece in 500 years from now on.
