At first I though this was just a damaged coin but then I noticed what looks like a die clash on Jefferson's shoulder and then again on the reverse under UNITED. Any thoughts on what this actually is? Error or no?

I am not saying one way or another definitively but it has potential. The planchet at least has what looks like a major flaw visible on the reverse.

The rest, I just cant tell without seeing this thing up close.

Thanks,
Bill

The mark on the reverse looks interesting, but the marks on the obverse are marks squeezed into the coin from another one. With a little imagination I figured out what they were. Some look like Cents another looks like a nickel on the reverse.

Although the reverse looked interesting with the other marks on the coin I feel this is a garage job with a vice and a couple of other coins. Cent on obverse Nickel/Cent on reverse.

Design squeezed into the coin was that of nickels, both sides. No cent details there.

But yes, all squeeze job, no error.

I agree, the close ups make it clear. This coin was squeezed between two other Jefferson nickels in a vice or..... It was placed in a stack of three coins and then whacked with a hammer.

Thanks,
Bill

the letters would be raised if it happened at the mint.

By flipping the images horizontally (Making the original images mirrored) helps to see what was on the coin that made contact with the original strike.

I'm not sure what type of error or variety you were referring to rockdude, but to be clear, there are many types of errors that take place at the mint which could result in recessed device effects like the lettering on this example. Strike-throughs, die clashes, and die caps to name a few.

But on them they only affect usually the obverse. The reverse looks normal. Not the case with this coin. Tampered.
