Hi all ... I recently obtained a really cool silver medal made by the Medallic Art company. It is super large medal with a 2.5 inch radius and weighs about 6.2 ounces of .999 silver. I have seen many smaller versions of this medal in silver and in bronze but none of the bigger version which I have. I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with this larger medal or the total number minted. Mine has the number 48 on the side of it which might be the mint number? Not sure ... I was able to find a 1971 article in the New York Times about the larger medal which says: "The initial, or keystone, issue will be reserved for the National Park Service. This specimen, 2½ inches in diameter, will be for presentation purposes and Yellowstone will provide the motif for its basic design." See: https://www.nytimes.com/1971/09/12/...l-parks.htmlAnyway if anyone else has any information about this I would love to know. I am hoping to somehow find and buy a second one if possible. @ochonosi, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes there are a few folks here who are quite knowledgeable about tokens. Third, to help us see what you have, could you please also post a pic of the other side of this piece?

Thanks for the kind welcome. I have added additional pictures for everyone to see. I also added a pic of the mint marks on the edge of the coint. Can't wait to learn more from you all!

More pics are definitely helpful. Also, you should consider doing a search of CCF for prior threads (the search box is in the upper left hand corner of your screen). When I use the keywords MEDALLIC ART YELLOWSTONE, I get a few hits, including this prior thread: http://goccf.com/t/269184

Thanks for the info. I did do a search but only found info about the smaller version of these medals. I have the large keystone version which according to the 1971 newspaper says: "The initial, or keystone, issue will be reserved for the National Park Service. This specimen, 2½ inches in diameter, will be for presentation purposes and Yellowstone will provide the motif for its basic design." See: https://www.nytimes.com/1971/09/12/.l-parks.htmlAnyone know about this larger version? What did presentation purposes mean? How many were made? Where they are now? Can I buy another one? Etc .... Any info would be great!

Ochonosi: I recently found out about these larger (2.75" diameter) medals after buying the smaller sizes. I bought a 2.75" bronze medal from an estate auction from one of the former (1972) regional directors of the National Park Service, who received these as gifts during the 1972 National Parks Centennial celebrations. They were never for sale, only presentation gifts during ceremonies. I don't know how many were made, but probably not many, and they were made in both bronze and silver. - David T *** Edited by Staff - Please review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***
