Notice the rim on the coins. On a coin that the reverse was shaved off, that rim will be missing.

Greg,

Assuming the coin is authentic, what may have happened to the penny is that two blank planchets were sandwiched together between the upper and lower coin dies. The upper planchet prevented the lower planchet from getting an obverse impression, and the lower planchet prevented the upper planchet from getting a reverse impression. When they were ejected from the dies, one planchet, yours, had an obverse impression only, and the other planchet had a reverse impression only.

Hi,

This is just a word of caution and I am not saying that it is the case in this instance.

More than once, it has happened that a guess on something that has not been seen has been used as an improper description for a coin sold on ebay.

Guesses are good but pictures are better:-) This coin could simply have been damaged.

Thanks,
Bill
