Are you sure that the rim problem is huge enough to give a details grade for this very lusterous coin? Here are further pictures

XF Details rim damage? How can you even throw out a grade like that? Assuming this coin does detail... there is absolutely no way it gets XF details. I am not a US coin guy and I don't really like gold coins, but to my eye, if this coin grades straight, it's at least an MS61. Luster is visible so that's a big plus. However, there is also a lot of "chatter" in the fields and I do not like that contact marks below the bust (above the date). Gold is a soft metal so the slightest contact with anything will leave marks. I've seen enough holdered US coins in the low MS range with this kind of chatter.

If it was silver I would call it AU58 because the fields have that circulated "look". For gold though, I have no idea.

I collect (german) gold coins for 5 years now. Each Half Eagle has still a huge amount of lustre, but bagmarks as well. So I think that they are all something between MS 58 and MS 63. My problem is that I dont know which one to choose. Agony of choice

Mid to high AU, the kind of thing that commonly exchanged hands as uncirculated when I was younger.

I would hardly call that a gouge and from my perspective, that's not something that would detail a coin, but that's besides the point. My issue is that you detailed this to XF when the coin is clearly high AU-low MS. Here is an example of an UNC details coin with similar level of detail and contact marks on the devices and fields. It is UNC details... not XF. I can sort of see this as an AU details but even still, UNC details makes more sense to me. https://coins.ha.com/itm/liberty-ha...ption-071515

The reason for my AU-58 grade was that I see a small bit of wear.
I agree that it doesn't appear to be EF, however.

XF details rim damage is absolutely ridiculous for a while I thought pictures had been switched until I saw other comments. AU58 on the first coin.
