Hello coin family of mine. I am, yet again, scratching my head. This time its over this 1969 S penny. I can see doubling on the obverse, specifically in the word TRUST. I think I may see it on the face of Lincoln, and possibly his bowtie as well.

I did some homework and learned there is a Doubled Die for that year and mint. There are some of the details that seem to fit. More specifically, doubling that appears on the obverse devices IN GOD WE TRUST.

I do have some doubt over how confident I am that it is one of the treasured 1969 S Doubled Die Obverse coins many keep an eye out for though. My doubt stems from the fact that the rare variety is said to have doubling on the word Liberty, as well as the date. The coin I have in my possession lacks any doubling in those areas.

I am left wondering if it is just Machine Doubling that just so happened to come pretty close to looking like the 1969 S variety. I could really use all the knowledge, help, and opinions anyone would be willing to share with me on this issue. And thanks so much for your time helping me, once again, to learn and grow in this area of my life. It's one of my favorite ways to spend my time.

Machine Doubling also known as Strike Doubling. No added value above face but neat example. I keep the best ones to show new collector/roll searchers. Keep looking and goodluck. Welcome to the Forum.

A doubled die is a miss hubbing of the die. Think of trying to use a rubber stamp and trying to get one stamping directly over another one. (we have all tried that. You know then the stamp is out of ink) But did it workout exactly over the first use of the stamp? Most will say no. But when the die is being hubbed, the second or third hubbing was out of alignment. (The newer die don't have this issue as they are hubbed only once) So you can end up with two to as many as four hubbings close to each other. But on machine doubled coins this is not the issue. The issue is that after the normal strike, the machine moves/hops/bounces and damages the edge of the devices. When this happens if makes just like your coin a set of reduced devices that are now smaller in size than the normal devices. On Machine Doubling the devices are enlarged is size.

Note on this image the reduction of the devices from Machine Doubling.
On a doubled die, you will find the devices enlarged:

Thank you very much everyone. Coop, I very much appreciate the time you took sending those pictures. I find that I do learn better when I have an opportunity to visualize the information in some way, and the pictures help things make sense. I had been leaning in the same direction all of you, and its nice to see my desire to learn is sinking in it seems. Back to the hunt...
