I'm going with "something else". It is a little weird though. It looks like it was melted, and yet asymmetrically on one side versus the other. There's just no end to the bizarre things people do to coins.

How is it heated but not effecting the reverse side in the same spot?

There have been numerous coins like this posted lately.
Maybe someone is having fun with a blowtorch.
Anyway, not an error as it didn't happen during
the striking of the coin. PMD

I'm thinking, when heated the expanding trapped gas takes the path of least resistance be it one side or both.

Though I don't advocate for coin mutilation. I suppose someone could experiment, by setting their coins out on a table in the house and wait for it to catch fire or toss them into burning coals using a BBQ or fire pit. Years ago I saw a youtube video where a person was heating the coins on the stove top in a frying pan.

I'm thinking, I got better things to do with my money. Thanks, Doug.

Note: not all have trapped gas between the clad layers.
