I going through a bucket of cents, that I've been working on for awhile now.
I read your post, and the very next coin I picked out of the bucket was an 1984-D LMC in absolutely terrible shape. I'm starting to see a pattern in some years. Some look very good after 30 years or so, others look very sad at a more recent date. I think I might go back through and try to figure out which dates are at a higher risk of developing fatal zinc rot.
1984 seem to have a poor strike record, they seem to have issues even when in good condition, or has someone already done a study I am not aware of ?

Its been noted in a couple of coin articles, that the early years for copper-plated zinc cents had plating issues and took awhile to work out. Sorry I've no links readily available right now. Thanks, Doug.

Looks like it was an Encased Cent, that now has environmental damage.
