Pulled this out of a junk silver box. Depending on the last two digits it could be, in fact, junk or something a bit more rare. I know nothing about these things like shape of numbers or such things and thought I'd ask here if anyone could home in on what those last numbers are.

Thanks for any help.

Starting to look like I've got a winner here. I was thinking maybe 1872, but am glad to hear from ya'll that know what that date is supposed to look like and are coming up with the same number.

1872 I guess, but somehow that "2" shape doesn't look quite right.

Pretty sure it's an 1877-S.

Comparing to the PCGS images of an 1872-S, the top of the 2 is very thin, the concavity inside the 2 is smooth, and there is no ball-shape at the base of the 2. Your coin doesn't appear to match. The only way to find out for sure is to send it in to ANACS.

Seems more likely to be 1877. I don't see how the bottom of a 2 could get pushed so far over and rounded like that, with no hint of the remainder of the bottom part. AG03 example below.

1877 Looks to me like someone pushed the last 7 into a 2 shape.

1877-S = $5
1872-S = $1,000

It's a 77.

I'm thinking, as suggested, that this is an 1877 with a mashed last digit. I too cannot imagine how the pointed foot of a 2 could end up looking like this.

What we need is a good overlay program. I see a final 7, with the distinctive domed top and bulbous leg base. The problem in confirming a 7 is that it's all beat up in the middle. But there are even greater problems trying to make this into a 2. As trdhrdr007 suggests, someone may have intentionally manipulated the final digit to make it two-ish...which sends it to the very bottom of the sack going to the melter....
