OK, I hate to ask, but you got me curious: Someone apparently sent the coin to NGC for grading and it came back as counterfeit. That part I get. But are you saying the person is trying to sell it anyway knowing this or are you saying the die type should be registered by others in case we see a similar coin on the market? Thanks:

How were you aware of the coin? Always good to know how we come across the fakes.

Thanks

In the interest of avoidance (presuming it's not a "one off" phony), I'd ask what was the source of the raw coin - online from some specific seller or at least what country it came out of. I'd also like to know on what basis it was judged to be not genuine, if that information can be divulged without making the counterfeiter better at his game.

I acquired this coin via CNG in 2014. I attempted to sell it in 2018 and the auction house used NGC to determine it is not genuine. I have sent it back to CNG and they are refunding me the $500 or so I paid for it. I always post fake coins, so people can look for copies or similar ones out there. No one is trying to sell this I am aware of. I also did not want to list where or details, as other forums have been upset when I post links to competitors.

Here is the original auction I acquired it from. Mainly, I want to just get this picture out there so we all avoid similar coins, I presume CNG will destroy this coin upon receipt.

Of course the coin could be real and NGC can be wrong. They state themselves there is no way to be 100% certain with ancients sometimes. And have a disclaimer:

"NGC Ancients is committed to grading only genuine coins, but it does not guarantee authenticity, genuineness or attribution, nor is any guarantee of these aspects implied. NGC Ancients will only holder coins it considers genuine at the time of submission, but it cannot guarantee the authenticity, genuineness, type, attribution or date of any coin it holders. Unlike modern coins, which often benefit from well-documented, scientific parameters for the verification of authenticity, there rarely is conclusive data for ancient coins, and generally there is no surviving documentation to verify production characteristics."
