I am look to Buy a key date 1928 Peace dollar. I was just looking at the auction realized prices on NGC's website, I found that most of the coins graded in that year had a details graded (about 80%+ of the ones on there). I don't know why perhaps someone will know here.

Thanks.

Most all of them have been cleaned and dipped to death the last 50 years. People can't leave them alone.

Agree exactly. Everybody wants something for nothing, so let's just improve this baby a bit.

Because it's the key date. The more valuable a coin is the more likely it will have been sent in to be graded. The authentication on the key dates is important to a lot of people as well. Basically the 1928s will get sent in in almost any condition where as a common date is only worth it in higher grades

I've heard that cleaning was accepted and popular more, "back in the day"

Really true. Way back when I was a kid and showed my coins to anyone, first thing they would say is "Why don't you clean those so the look better". And as kids do, we all cleaned our coins.

Welcome! It seems to be the case for most of the Peace dollars, so I wouldn't say it's more on the 1928. That said, and dependent on the price, buy them. Even with details grading, this is proof of authenticity. VERY under priced when compared to the key date 1934s. 360,649 versus 1,011,000 mintage. Lowest in a series doesn't make it the key date.

Money. Unfortunate, but true.

I purchased a RAW 1928 Peace to place in my book. Upon receiving the coin, I decided to send to PCGS. Lock 63 and chance at 64. Difference between the two grades....$350 for MS63 and $1000 for MS64. Luckily, mine graded as a 64. Yes, very happy with the results. But, that is the chance a person takes.
