Have you hear about the "low-ball" collectors? I am not kidding, but they want really low-grade certified coins.

Fools .... I disagree . A form of collecting that is as legit as collecting finest known registry sets. I have been working on a low ball Canada Silver Dollar Set for over Forty Years with no end in sight and must say that I have lots of Competition !

It's always nice to see a straight grade on a P-01.
The last Fair-02 I got was detailed for being cleaned. The term cleaned doesn't mean a whole lot on a coin that has had most of its details removed.

lot easier to make your low-ball set for PCGS than the high end ....money-wise I mean. People take pride in both types of sets.

I will never understand why some people mock how others collect. Straight graded 01s are hard to get and a lot of people enjoy them.

People do crazy things when they collect stuff I happen to like 1938-D Buffalo nickels. I have been buying them for well over 25 years. Last time I counted them I had something like 6000 of them. Is it stupid and a poor investment? Of course. I still like them though and picked up a couple of more this past week! I'll probably keep doing it till I'm a babbling idiot or a drooling old man. Point is to collect and buy what YOU like!

Quote: Is it stupid and a poor investment? Nothing wrong with that. I would just never put the words "coin collecting" and "investment" in the same sentence.

Quote: I would just never put the words "coin collecting" and "investment" in the same sentence. I collect for the love of the hobby and not as an investment! If I wanted to invest it surely would be with coins! Besides, the market for numismatic coins Is not the same as the market for precious metals or bullion!

"None lower", until PCGS starts grading PO01-, and CAC starts doing "low for the grade" stickers.

This one is probably Fair, but I like it and just got it, so I'm showing it off. Its easier to see on the coin itself that it's from 1929, but if there was a mint mark, it's worn off.

PCGS Blog: http://www.PCGSblog.com/jaime/news/...w-ball-coins"Numerous times collectors have sent in coins graded PCGS Fair 2 under a grade review, in hopes of getting their coin downgraded to a grade of Poor 1." Nice for them; they get extra business from coins at the low end.
