This fills the hole until I can afford something better. With a reverse worn almost smooth, how many hands did this pass through before someone noticed it was an 1885? Were there no reference books in that era that would have alerted people to this date's low mintage?

Nice, nic. I scored a pitted, clear strong date '85 here on CCF. It was an auction & I

think I paid about 100.

Back in the 1800's up until about 1940 most people had bigger things to worry about than what date a particular coin just happened to be. Coin collecting did not catch on big time until the 1940's and then took off in the 1950's and 60's with the roll craze and when people began searching through bags of coins for key dates. I call those the good ol' days of coin collecting.

I remember my uncle telling me about when he worked a part time job in a bowling alley in Texas in the 1950's and 60's and would go through the cash register at the end of his shift looking for odd stuff he might be able to exchange. (I know he was looking for the 1960 small date cents!). He told me he'd find 1938-D Walking Liberty half dollars but couldn't afford to pull them out and keep them. He was trying to raise three kids!

Your coin passed through a lot of hands cause those people just couldn't afford to keep it.
