I recently inherited a coin collection and just started going through it so please excuse me lack of knowledge. From my brief research this evening I understand the 1909-s Indian head has more value than most the others. I guess I'm just curious what the potential value might be and if it's worth joining a grading site and getting it graded for possible sell? Sorry If the pics aren't good

If it is a genuine 1909-S IHC, it is worth submitting for grading/encapsulation. It looks good to me.

It's a nice low mintage date.

To CCF , Well as far as joining a grading site many of us here at CCF love to give our opinions on the grade of coins . Some are right on the money ,some are not , but we don't get paid to professionally grade ,authenticate and slab your coins . anyway yes your coin is a little blurry but I can tell it only has about half of the word LIBERTY showing ''a very important part of any IHC .However, in hand it might show a little more . I also see only one diamond showing on headdress ribbon and the lack of any Beads around Indians neck is an issue by itself . The reverse is typically nice with nothing unusual going on . The S mint mark is clear and bold . As a mater of fact there are no discerning hits or scratches on entire coin . This said , in my opinion the grade on this coin is VF-20 . By all means because it's a key date IHC send it in for grading by TPG .

If I were you I'd just put it in an Album and keep it. However, as noted if you plan on just selling it, as noted already simply look up what has been selling on ebay. That coin show be in the $500 range.

LIBERTY appears to be complete but not sharp, best I would give it is F-15 but standards have loosened since I learned grading and I would not be surprised if a TPG gave is VF-20 or even 25.

Yes VF-20 possibly cleaned at one time. Tough coin to find!

Still would like to see straight-on pics outside of the plastic. There is a sense of cleaning and re-toning here.

And if you are going to sell, then yes, a slabbed one will bring in more money on a place like ebay. PCGS is market-favored over the others by a lot of people who like slabbed coins. However, if keeping the coin, do not think b/c your coin is rare that it NEEDs to be slabbed. If you just like slabbed coins and/or just want to have it done, then go for it. Otherwise. don't waste the money for something people on the forum can tell you for free. Also know that a slab offers no more protection for the coin itself than an inexpensive Air-Tite capsule. Very nice cent to own!
