I do not see any doubling on the S, but it is not that clear in the picture. The stars appear to be Machine Doubling, which is a characteristic of the strike, and not the Die. I-2 R-3 Obverse III2 4- Die chip between the loops on the right of the first 8 with a short die chip at top left inside of upper loop, surface doubling on bottom outside of lower loop and tripled on top left inside of lower loop. First 1 doubled slightly below upper crossbar. Second 1 doubled slightly on left side of shaft. But I'm not see'n the definition in maroon? Jadey Pillar of the Community United States 900 Posts	Posted 03/12/2019 7:03 pm Those numbers identify the VAM, Obverse Hub Type (masters from which dies are made), Obverse Die identifier, Reverse Hub Type, Reverse Die identifier, Brief description of the VAM, number of reeds on the edge, Interest Level, Rarity Level. Go to the VAM Introduction page and scroll down to just below the Heading "Reading the VAM Pages". There is a table that coincidentally uses 1881S as an example. Then, scroll further down the page to "Other Things You'll Observe" and read the difference between Strike Doubling vs Doubled Dies. I'm pretty sure your stars are exhibiting Strike Doubling.
