@JM13, that would be a dream find. Any chance of you taking close-up pics of the mintmark and VDB initials with the coin taken outside of the 2x2?

maybe. Need a few more clear pics, especially close ups of the date and the VDB which looks a bit odd.

Please take it out of the 2x2 and take new pics, include close ups. When you put it back in a holder use an Air-tite if the coin is genuine or a 2x2 if it is a fake. Make sure to flatten those staples on all of your 2x2's. John1

Quote: Position 3. aka Die Marker #3. That's what I was thinking also. That's a big plus for it being genuine. Hard to see the VDB on the reverse - kinda gunked up - some close ups would help. This would be quite a find!

Wow! It is in awfully good condition for 110 years old. Makes me think it was put away for a long time by someone who understood it was special and then later spent by someone who didn't. Glad you found it.

That VDB doesn't look correct to me, but the pic is lousy.

I have heard stories of key date Lincolns being released "into the wild" by wealthy numismatists. I never heard of an S-VDB being cast away though.

Please define "in the wild". Where did you get it? If you found it searching circulation coins, that's one of the greatest finds I've ever heard of. The coin looks to be at least AU, better pictures out of the holder would help. My immediate gut was genuine, I'd like to see a close-up of the mintmark. You need to see if it has the infamous die chip.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THIS COIN
Most people are immediately temped to "clean it up a bit" - that is the WORST thing you could do.
