Okay, this coin is a mess with a bunch of problems that are clearly PMD.

However, the reverse is what I'm curious about.

Although you can't see it in the photos, the coin has a slightly concave aspect to it centered in that somewhat arcing flat spot running from the "N" in Cent down through US of A.

It's possible that damage on the obverse around Lincoln's face could be the result of a strike of some kind, but those gouges don't show any signs of flattening or scratches and the flattening on the reverse is much wider, taking up almost half the coin.

What's more, there's a very distinctive "O" shape around "OF" that just looks too round to be coincidental, but doesn't appear to involve the "O" in "OF". If that circle was put on the coin after the "O", wouldn't you expect to see it on top of the "O"? The last picture is as close as I can zoom into the area where the two intersect and shows the top half of the "O".

Thanks for taking the time and sharing your thoughts.

H

This coin is showing heavy PSD flattening the devices. Just a Wheat cent now.

@HGK3, I too am curious about that circular area on the O of OF. Is that area inset or is it just surface discoloration?

The area appears to be inset, although it's hard to be certain with my amateur photo set up. It really looks like the "O" was struck after the circle because of how they intersect.

Also, if the flattened area on the reverse is due to the coin being struck on the obverse by something, shouldn't we see some flattening on the obverse in the area it's hit?

What that area could be, it is probably a stain.
